Saturday, April 15, 2-4 PM: Paul Neville, author of "The Garbage Brothers:" Book Signing, Meet and Greet, and Impromptu Reads
About “The Garbage Brothers:” Eighteen-year-old Jesse Wheeler’s comfortable suburban existence crumbles after his father dies, leaving his naive son adrift and without prospects. He finds a summer job humping garbage for Willard Sanitation Service with a crew of felons — Pickles, Zeus, Grits and their foreman Billy Bart—in the flyspeck town of Freedom. A coworker introduces Jesse to his niece, a plain-speaking, beautiful young woman named Iris who reshapes Jesse’s universe. Jesse’s ability to survive the punishing lessons inflicted by his co-workers while winning their grudging respect and friendship fills this gritty coming-of-age story with warmth, laughter and heartache.
Paul Neville is a retired, award winning journalist who worked for decades as a reporter and editor at newspapers in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. He lives in Oregon, where he is a writer, whitewater kayaker and singer-songwiter whose favorite gigs are playing for the homeless. And, yeah, he once helped pay his way through Northwestern University in Chicago by working as a garbage collector.
Paul worked for the Register Guard and SVDP here in Eugene for decades. His first book, “The Garbage Brothers,” (novel) is a great fun romp.
