Catalan hurdy gurdy virtuoso Marc Egea and Oregon composer/pianist Paul Safar come together for a special performance at Tsunami Books.
This unique duo will present an eclectic mix of original compositions from each musician plus Catalan folk and classical pieces, American jazz standards as well as free improvisation. Expect music ranging from Jarrett to Mompou and Albeniz to Shorter.
Marc and Paul share a love for musical exploration, including this ancient and earthy instrument called by various names: zanfona, viola de roda and hurdy gurdy. The musical friends shared cross cultural connections during the pandemic with an online recording of free improv called “Morning Improvisations”. Paul also composed an intricate chamber piece for Marc along with Eugene musicians Ben Farrell (bass clarinet) and Sean Brennan(percussion) called “Pendulum Palindrome” that was recorded in America and Catalonia(check it out on youtube). Now the two friends get to meet in person and play a special set for gurdy and piano.
Please welcome Marc for his first visit to the United States by coming to this unique musical combination.
