Folks, we are so thrilled to have these two Oregon gentlemen coming to the Tsunami Stage. The last time the two of them played here together was 2012. (In the booking arrangements at the time, Mike Meyer wrote ”I have a duo (Jake Jolliff and Alex Hargreaves) that I feel is Triscka-level genius interested in a last minute booking.” According to Alex, his first public performance was on the Tsunami Stage when he was 6 years old. They’ve each been here in a number of combinations. This indeed will be a most special show.

About Jake: Jacob Jolliff was born into a musical family in Newberg, OR. His dad started him on the mandolin at age seven and required him to practice ten minutes a day. But after six months of practicing this minimal amount, something clicked, and almost overnight he started putting in several hours of intense practice daily. And this hasn't really changed in the last 20 years.

When he was 18, Jacob was awarded a full scholarship to The Berklee College of Music in Boston. He moved to Massachusetts to start school in 2007, along with a lot of the other young musicians he had grown up with. In 2008, during his sophomore year of college, he joined the New England based roots music band, Joy Kills Sorrow. Over the next few years the group toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, playing hundreds of clubs, theaters, and festivals, but still managed to graduate in 2011. Shortly after he won the 2012 National Mandolin Championship in Winfield, Kansas.

In 2014, after three records, hundreds of shows, and thousands of miles in a 15 passenger van, Joy Kills Sorrow went on an indefinite hiatus. Within a couple weeks of the band's last show, the young mandolinist got a call from the progressive bluegrass jam group, Yonder Mountain String Band. He immediately connected musically and personally with the band, and shortly after he became a full-time member. Jacob played with Yonder until the end of 2019, releasing three albums with the group.

Now in 2022, the mandolinist’s main focus is The Jacob Jolliff Band. This ensemble is a group of virtuosic pickers that play Jacob's original instrumentals, as well as showcase his singing. They tour nationally in the US and have also travelled to Scotland and Australia to perform.

Jacob’s all-original first album, entitled, “Instrumentals, Vol. 1” was released in 2018.

Over the years, Jacob has had pleasure of sharing the stage with many legendary musicians spanning many genres including Darol Anger, Tony Trischka, Sam Bush, Ronnie McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Bryan Bowers, John Popper, The David Grisman Quintet, Widespread Panic, The String Cheese Incident, Michael Daves, Alex Hargreaves, and many more. About Alex: Described as “one of the greatest improvising violinists in America today” by virtuoso mandolinist/composer Mike Marshall, Alex Hargreaves is a fiddler who draws inspiration from a wide variety of genres and traditions. Based in Brooklyn, NY, Alex has toured with Jerry Douglas, David Grisman, Bela Fleck, Danilo Perez, Sarah Jarosz.; also the Punch Brothers, Sierra Hull, Steve Martin and Kacey Musgraves, appearing on her Saturday Night Live debut. For the past several months he has been touring with Billy Strings. He was a member of the Grammy award-winning Turtle Island Quartet from 2016–2019, appearing on their 2018 release, Bird’s Eye View, and can often be heard playing in the house band on the public radio variety show, Live From Here with Chris Thile.

At age 17, Alex, along with bassist Paul Kowert (Punch Brothers), teamed with Mike Marshall to form The Big Trio, performing together extensively following the release of their self-titled album in 2009. From 2007–2014, he toured with Grammy-nominated singer/multi-instrumentalist, Sarah Jarosz, appearing on her three critically acclaimed albums, Song Up In Her Head, Follow Me Down and Build Me Up From Bones, as well as being featured on her Grammy-nominated instrumental, Mansinneedof. Alex released his debut album Prelude in 2010, featuring Mike Marshall, Grant Gordy and Paul Kowert, along with special guests Bela Fleck and Noam Pikelny. In reference to Alex’s playing on the album, David Grisman says “[Alex] plays with wit, authority and soulfulness belying his years. In my opinion, he's destined to be one of the fiddle giants of the 21st century.”

Alex was awarded the Jimmy Lyons full tuition scholarship to the Berklee College of Music at the 2010 Monterey Jazz Festival. While studying at Berklee, Alex completed the prestigious Global Jazz Institute, providing him with the opportunity to work one-on-one with artistic director Danilo Perez (Wayne Shorter Quartet), along with countless other jazz legends. During this time, Alex also toured with Perez and recorded on his album, Panama 500. http://www.alexhargreaves.net/about
